Bookeen, the European leader of the ebook reader market, will launch its next-generation reading device, the Cybook Orizon in mid-October.  Suggested retail price is 229.99€.

Thinner than a newspaper and lighter than a book (245 g – 8.6 oz), the Cybook Orizon boasts a non-glare, multi-touch screen with reading quality close to that of paper.

Thanks to its integrated Wi-Fi connectivity, the Cybook Orizon lets you very easily download your book in a few seconds.

Its sleek lines (it’s just 0.29’’ – 7.6 mm thick) give book lovers an elegant tool for a unique reading experience.

The Cybook Orizon was developed in its entirety by Bookeen’s engineering teams in France.

A new generation of ebook reader, packed with innovations

Turn the pages with your fingertips.  The screen incorporates “Caress touch ePaper” technology.  “For a long time, we’ve been trying to incorporate a touch technology that didn’t compromise the screen’s readability.  With Cybook Orizon, it’s a done deal. No glare at all, the Cybook Orizon stays readable in full sunshine.”  announced Michel Dahan, cofounder of Bookeen.  “Just touch the page lightly, and everything becomes simpler, more intuitive.”

Annotate, highlight text to remember key points as you read, adjust the character size simply by moving your fingers, thanks to the screen’s multi-touch capability. “We wanted to make a reader you can use as soon as you get your hands on it.  So for us, it was simple:  make it multi touch from the beginning,” says Bookeen cofounder Laurent Picard. “Thanks to the touch screen, you’ll find it’s easy to use, and a pleasure to interact with.”

All that technology is packed into a device the thickness of a magazine.  “Getting it down to 0.29’’ (7.6 mm) was a true technical challenge.  Our engineers worked hard to make it that thin and at the same time adhere to the highest standards of durability,” Michael Dahan points out.  “The result is better than expected. We managed to build the thinnest ebook reader in the world.”

Your books immediately available

The Cybook Orizon has a built-in WiFi module.  You can download a book in a minute or so without having to use your computer.  “With Cybook Orizon, we wanted to give users immediate access to books directly from Cybook.  For premium content, we did a lot of work on buying dynamics to make the process extremely simple for the user,” says marketing director Jean-Luc Satin.  Cybook Orizon is a real alternative to American competitors, but this time with a European based catalogue.”

Bookeen will address all major European countries. Bookeen will bring every local Book catalogue to the Cybook Orizon, enabling European customers to buy their books in their own language. To enable his European bookstore, Bookeen collaborates with major players in digital book distribution in Europe.

We will begin with France. French customers will enjoy access to most of the French digital catalogue:  25,000 titles issued by 185 publishers.

The same set will be rolled out at the end of the year in many European countries, such as Italy and Spain.

The Cybook Orizon allows direct access to a catalog of free books, and 150 classic books are embedded for the user to discover and enjoy reading on the Cybook Orizon.

Internet access:  surf the net unrestricted

The Cybook Orizon is also equipped with an unrestricted web browser that allows you access the web site of your choice with no limits, and download content that’s readable on your device.

The Cybook Orizon will be available for pre-order starting September 25 at bookeen.com and retail partner sites.

New information will be available in the next few weeks via www.bookeen.com, Facebook and Twitter.

The Cybook Orizon will be available in black and white.

Cybook Orizon: Reading, as you like it

Friday, September 3rd, 2010

We’ve had many questions about the features of the Cybook Orizon, here’s a first look. The Cybook Orizon personalises the reading experience to the reader; choose from 12 different text sizes, change the font, and add your own favourite fonts.

Using the touch screen, you can highlight important passages, add bookmarks to make sure you don’t forget anything, or even add notes.

With the wifi connection, you’re never far from your next book: download it wherever and whenever you want. The Cybook Orizon’s extra-slim design slips easily into a bag or even a large pocket, for keeping up with your mobile lifestyle. Read in any situation, even in full sunlight, for more than 2 weeks on a single charge.

Coming soon: most likely at the end of next week, we’ll reveal the launch date and other key information, as well as opening pre-orders for the Cybook Orizon.

And, as always, join the discussion on facebook and twitter.

At last, news of the Cybook Orizon!

Friday, August 27th, 2010

Yesterday I got to hold in my hands a real Cybook Orizon; after the mock-ups and prototypes it’s really exciting to see the final product really exist! We know you’ve been dying for some news and how impatient you are. So without further ado, in a world-wide sneak preview, the very first real photos (not 3D renders) of the Cybook Orizon:

Cybook Orizon Black

Cybook Orizon White

The two models have a bicolored case, with a black front and white back or the other way around.

It’s incredibly thin but really feels solid and robust, thanks to our reinforcement specifically to protect the screen. And the back of the case feels really nice to the touch; the black one has a velvety texture, and the white one has a glossy lacquer finish. The definitive dimensions are: width  4.9” (125,7mm), height 7.5” (189,49mm), and only 0.29” (7,6mm) thick, that’s incredibly thin! It weighs 8.6oz. and has a 6” screen, 600×800 pixels for a 167 dpi resolution, and 16-level greyscale.

The touchscreen is impressive: very sensitive, really fast, and since the touch layer is integrated in the screen there is no glare or distortion. There are some amazing touch features, we’ll be unveiling them soon and I think you’ll love them. First clue: I saw Google in a screen…

Not all the details are available yet but the good news is that as we get closer to launch I’ll be giving you more information right here, sometimes before it’s released anywhere else!  And in fact we’ll be saving a few other special advantages for our faithful readers…

The Cybook Orizon adventure continues next week!

Adobe Press Release

Best wishes 2008

Friday, January 25th, 2008

First of all, with almost one month late, best wishes 2008 to all of you.

This year 2007 has been tremendous for Bookeen. Against all odds, we have released our Cybook Gen3 almost on time and the device has met a smashing success. As already announced several times before, we have been overwhelmed by the demand and we all thank you for this success. The first reactions of our customers and professionals have been great obtaining a 9 out of 10 from TrustedReviews with a nice “Of all the dedicated eBook readers I’ve seen this is definitely the best”.

We have also noted all the remarks of our first customers : folder support, delete key, better sound interface and our dev team is already working on them. Please note that, even if we are not very responsive, we always read all your emails and take in account your feedback.

Since our creation in 2003, Bookeen has always tried to keep in touch with its customers and to offer a reactive and efficient customer support. Concerning this part of our job, we clearly have not met our quality imperatives for the Cybook Gen3 release. We are now making all the necessary decisions to have a customer support department running properly.

In parrallel of our online store, a reseller network has grown much faster than expected and right now almost 11 stores (both web and brick and mortar) are selling the Cybook Gen3. This network is increasing every week and we invite everyone interested by selling the Cybook to get in touch with us.

We have also been part of several great initiatives like the NAEB buyer’s club and the Cluster21 publisher pack. I will describe these two initiatives in future posts.

We will definitely be more active on this blog and give you fresh news about Bookeen and Cybook Gen3 in the next few days.

Thanks again.

Regards,

Michael
