Bookeen Press Release
Paris, 26th February 2013

Following on from the success of the launch of Bookeen’s e-readers by Thalia in Germany, Switzerland and Austria during Christmas 2012, the leading German Bookstore has decided to enhance its e-reader solution by adding a cloud solution powered by Deutsche Telekom.

Bookeen has been working since summer 2012 to link and connect all the Cybooks sold by Thalia to this new cloud solution. This set up offers new features helping to synchronise customers’ content within Thalia’s ecosystem.

In 2012, Thalia released Bookeen’s Cybook Odyssey HD FrontLight and Cybook Odyssey 2013 Edition inbuilt with Thalia’s eBook store within 300 stores in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Thanks to the partnership between Bookeen and Thalia, Thalia is a leader in the German digital eBook industry. As a result of its partnership with Thalia, Bookeen has contributed to making e-reading become a mainstream technology in Germany.

Dr Bernhard Mischke, Thalia Director Digital and Mobile says: “Our collaboration with Bookeen enabled us to offer our customers eReading devices of high quality. The eReader “Cybook Odyssey HD FrontLight”, for example, has been a great success, especially throughout the Christmas season. Therefore, we plan to continue our cooperation as well as improving the current range of products.”

Michael Dahan, Bookeen CEO says: “We are delighted to be continuing our work with prestigious partners as such as Thalia and Deutsche Telekom for their e-reader solution. Since we announced our partnership with Thalia last summer, we have seen a significant success in sales of the Cybook Odyssey HD FrontLight sold by Thalia. This demonstrates that there is a strong market for e-reading in Germany and we are still continuing to position Bookeen as one of the industry leaders in Europe.”

Cybook Odyssey HD Frontlight

On top of managing this new solution, all Cybooks connected to Thalia ebook stores (Thalia.de, Thalia.at, Thalia.ch, Buch.de) will be able to synchronise content (new books, archived books, books opened on other devices, last page position…) within Thalia’s ecosystem.

To continue the collaboration, Bookeen is managing everyday actions on Thalia/Cybook devices (new features thru OTA updates…) and working with Thalia’s team on a future common project for an innovative and premium reading solution to be announced later on this year.

Cybook Odyssey HD FrontLight

More about the FrontLight by Bookeen

The light is guided to the surface of the display through a thin light layer. It illuminates the text and enhances the contrast. The FrontLight solution turns the eBook screen into a spectacular white page. The light is not emitted from the back or from above. It is a completely innovative technology which creates a layer of light. Therefore, FrontLight evenly illuminates the screen and makes reading much easier. Michaël Dahan, Bookeen CEO: “With the Cybook Odyssey HD FrontLight we have designed a device for readers who want to enjoy their favorite books at any time of day wherever they are.”

The FrontLight is inbuilt with a great lighting system which is easy on the eyes, offering an amazing reading experience.

A new generation of E Ink HD display

The Cybook Odyssey HD display (758 x 1024 resolution) is the most advanced e-reader display. It has 62% more pixels than current e-readers and is extremely comfortable for your eyes.

Laurent Picard, Bookeen General Manager: “With so many dots per inch, text has never been so sharp and pictures have never been so crisp on an E Ink display: our algorithms which have been optimised over the years really show their true potential. With the FrontLight allowing people to read in all lighting conditions, we offer an unprecedented experience in terms of reading comfort.

Bookeen is about to launch the new Cybook Odyssey HD FrontLight: The world’s lightest e-reader solution!

Tuesday, October 9th, 2012

Bookeen is announcing today the launch of the new Cybook Odyssey HD FrontLight, the 6th generation and most advanced Cybook with an inbuilt FrontLight solution and with the most advanced E Ink® HD display. Since 1998, Bookeen has been the European champion in digital reading years before Amazon entered the market.

Cybook Odyssey HD Frontlight

The new Cybook Odyssey HD FrontLight which will be launched first in Europe starting from November 2012 marks a revolution in the e-reader market. It is embedded with an HD display, innovative and low power consumption FrontLight technology and an enhanced user interface. It is also ergonomically designed, made with Bookeen’s HSIS technology (High Speed Ink System) as well as smart connectivity technology. Bookeen disrupts digital reading with this high quality e-reader incorporating brand new technology.

Michael Dahan, Bookeen CEO: “In 2007 with the launch of the first reader with E Ink® display technology, we participated in making digital reading a success. We did this by offering a new comfort and demonstrating how the competition between e-readers and paper books is changing our lives. Now with the new Cybook Odyssey HD FrontLight we are making a huge step forward, demonstrating that we are the only independent solution to partner with booksellers against Amazon or Kobo”.

Most Advanced E-Reader Display

Cybook Odyssey HD display is the most advanced e-reader display. Featuring a 213 DPI display, the Cybook Odyssey HD display has 62% more pixels than current e-readers. This means that all fonts and images will be defined more precisely and will benefit from a 758 x 1024 resolution screen.

This new capacitive touch display (with anti-glare treatment) offers the best digital reading experience in a very slim device.

Adopt the FrontLight revolution

As a pioneer in e-reader technology, Bookeen has worked on bringing a solution in low light conditions which is easy for the reader’s eyes. The Cybook Odyssey HD FrontLight offers a choice of twenty levels of FrontLighting by sliding the regulator on the touch screen and adjusting the light power according to the environment.

If you want to have a whiter screen, simply activate the FrontLight with the menu button; the reader can use the FrontLight in any environment.

A new version of Bookeen’s user interface

With the newest HD screen, Bookeen invested a lot of energy in optimising this new display and resolution to all content on theCybook interface. The result is spectacular in terms of pixel management.

With this version, Bookeen introduces PDF reflow option to the Cybook Odyssey. For PDF users this new software feature makes reading as easy as possible. This is a key element in order to read the content in a better layout without having to manipulate the display.

This Cybook offers an inbuilt High Speed Ink System to operate any action at a fast pace.

A perfect design for reading at home or when on the go

The Cybook Odyssey is an international success with sales in more than 40 countries; this new version is even more appealing.

The Cybook Odyssey HD FrontLight now weighs only 180 g/6.35 oz positioning this device as one of the world’s lightest and thinnest readers (thinner than a magazine or a paper book (9.4mm)).The Cybook Odyssey is one of the few readers to offer a perfect touch screen management AND mechanical buttons. These backward and forward page buttons can also be reversed on the settings to fit the use or preferences of customers (left or right handed).

A full range of covers is available in six different colours from Old Pink, Black and Red Vermillion.

Low power consumption technology

If the reader is used in daylight or in a dark environment, battery management must be optimal. This is why Bookeen’s engineers optimized the power management of the laminated light guide film used in the FrontLight technology.

Thanks to this efficient battery management and with a use of 1/2 hours of reading per day with the FrontLight, the Cybook will last for weeks of reading on just a single charge.

Wi-Fi connection

Thanks to its built-in Wi-Fi connection, the Cybook Odyssey HD FrontLight will let readers download new content when at home or on the go.

The Cybook HD FrontLight is coming soon in November

Price, technical specs and key leading retail partners will be announced soon

On top of this launch, in November Bookeen will introduce a new version of its best seller with the Cybook Odyssey 2013 Edition

This new reader will be lighter than the previous Cybook Odyssey (180g vs. 195g) and will offer new software features such as the PDF reflow, ability to reverse the page buttons function. This new version is equipped with an E Ink Pearl display, capacitive touch and built-in Wi-Fi to download books wherever you want in seconds. This Cybook offers an inbuilt High Speed Ink System to process any action at a fast pace.

More about the Cybook Odyssey and the High Speed Ink System technology

Wednesday, October 19th, 2011

Press release Bookeen Paris, 19th October 2011

Following the announcement of our new product, the Cybook Odyssey, we received many questions regarding the HSIS technology.

Bookeey Cybook Odyssey

What is High Speed Ink System (HSIS)?

HSIS is an architecture developed by Bookeen and results from 2 years of research & development. This architecture is made of hardware and software components in order to boost electronic ink.

Cornerstones of HSIS which are incorporated within the Cybook Odyssey are:

  • Optimized software stack and algorithms, developed with quality and performance in mind from the ground up. The main goals are to increase computing speed and refresh display rate thanks to a very sharp display management.
  • An E Ink Pearl touch display providing a best-in-class e-paper reading experience.
  • A dedicated Cortex A8 processor, developed by Texas Instruments in partnership with Bookeen, which brings pure and efficient horsepower.

A consumer electronic product can be seen as a chain of hardware and software elements. As for any chain, it is as strong as its weakest link. With HSIS, the chain is perfectly balanced; all links are robust and optimized. HSIS is the foundation for a brand new groundbreaking E Ink based user experience.

What does HSIS bring to the Cybook Odyssey?

  • Comfort: an intuitive e-reading experience.
  • Speed: a reactive and smooth user interface.
  • Power efficiency: record battery life.

For example, the Cybook Odyssey is the first e-paper reader to provide rolling menus or a scrolling web browser. More features will be revealed in the forthcoming days.

How will HSIS evolve?

This architecture already allows e-reading devices to be built with different display sizes, with different bistable technologies, and with grayscale as well as color e-paper displays.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank E-Ink and Texas Instruments for these fruitful collaborations.

Based in Paris (France), the Bookeen team has been pioneers in the ebook industry since 1998 and has developed many e-reading solutions in over 13 years. We’re very proud to bring innovation to the market with our HSIS technology and through the launch of the Cybook Odyssey you will be able to experience it to its full capacity.
