No. The Cybook screen is not backlit. As a sheet of paper the Cybook E Ink® screen uses ambient light to enlighten the reading surface. Your Cybook is thus readable in full sunlight which is not the case for almost all standard LCD displays.

Connect your Cybook to your computer via the USB cable. Drag and drop (copy) your TrueType font file in the "Font" folder of the Cybook internal memory. You will then be able to choose it in the "Font Family" submenu.

MP3 is supported with no DRM.

NOTE: Because each of these steps represents a possible solution to this issue, check the audio status after completing each step.

1) Verify that the headphones are firmly plugged into the headphone jack.

2) Increase the volume on the Reader.

3) If the headphones have a volume control, ensure the volume is adjusted to an appropriate level.

4) If an extension cable is being used to connect the headphones, disconnect the extension cable and then connect the headphones directly.

5) Test the headphones on another device.

6) Test a different set of headphones on the Reader.

7) Check your MP3 file is working properly on another MP3 player device

There can be at least two reasons:

1) As your Mobipocket^TM book is protected by a DRM system, a copyright-protected book cannot be read on any device other than the authorized device.

2) The format of the book is not supported, In this case, consult the list of supported formats (*) to know if you can read the file you transferred.

* The list of supported formats depends on your Cybook software version. Check your Cybook software version and upgrade your device if necessary.

No, additional software or programs cannot be installed on the Reader.

Your data have been kept in persistent internal storage memory or SD card. You just can't use your Cybook anymore until you put your Cybook on charge.

Yes, you can synchronise some data between your Cybook and your computer (only PC*) using the Mobipocket^TM software: Mobipocket Desktop reader (you can download it for free from Mobipocket website).

This software synchronise the books you bought from the different online libraries and the eNews and RSS you subscribed to.

No, the Cybook is not a PDA, no calendar, contact or task information can be synchronized with your Cybook.

*The Mobipocket Desktop Reader is not available for Mac and Linux. On these machines, the Cybook is seen as a simple external storage drive and the Mobipocket files must be transferred manually.

No. There is no touchscreen and no stylus on the Cybook.

You control the Cybook with its buttons.

You can store your books either in the internal memory of the Cybook or in an extra optional memory card.

The internal storage capacity is made of 512 MB (Mega Bytes) of persistent memory. It represents 1000 standard books in Mobipocket, HTML or Text format.

You can increase your storage capacity by using an optional memory card and get an extra storage space until 2 GB (2 Giga Bytes = 2 048 Mega Bytes). It represents 10 000 standard books in Mobipocket, HTML or Text format.

There is 512 MB (Mega Bytes) of internal memory in the Cybook. This memory can be used to store different kind of files like eBook files, MP3 files, image files or font files.

This internal memory is persistent. Even if your Cybook runs out of battery, all the data in your internal memory is conserved.

For information, 512 MBytes represents 1000 standard books in Mobipocket, HTML or Text format.

You can increase your storage capacity by using a memory card and get an extra storage until 2 GB (2 Giga Bytes = 2 0248 Mega Bytes).

The Cybook has a SD (Secure digital) card slot. Standard SD memory card (as the ones used for digital cameras) can be used with the Cybook. The Cybook may not be able to read certain SD cards with more than 2 GBytes of memory size.

No. The Cybook USB only functions in slave mode. The Cybook must be used with a USB Host (a computer for instance).

No. The Cybook doesn't have any built-in network adapter and you can't use the SD slot with I/O cards (only memory cards are supported).

The battery of the Cybook is of Lithium Polymer type offering a capacity of 1000 mAh.

It can be changed if needed, as it is located in a compartment which can be opened easily (one screw). Only the batteries sold by Bookeen are accepted for the Cybook.

The battery is recharged via the Cybook USB connector. The charging time is around 3 hours. You can recharge your battery via a connection with a computer or directly from a USB charger provided by Bookeen.

The Cybook can run in several modes:

- Normal mode, the Cybook led is switched on and the processor is running at full speed. While you play a MP3 file the Cybook is running in this mode. In this mode the Cybook battery lifetime is around 3 hours.

- Sleep mode, the Cybook led is switched off and the processor is in sleep mode waiting for an interrupt to wake-up. If MP3 is OFF and you are not turning a page or using a menu, the battery lifetime is one week.

- Off mode, the Cybook is completely switched off; you need to use the ON button to wake it up. It takes few seconds for the Cybook to be up and running. In this mode the battery lifetime depends on energy leak of the battery and the battery reach 0% capacity after more than a year.

As you get in sleep mode between each page flip and the Cybook switches off automatically after a certain delay of inactivity, the Cybook battery lifetime can vary from several hours (MP3 playing) to several month (80 page flips per day with switch-off at the end of each reading session).

The operating system is not accessible via a shell interface or a remote tool.

The Cybook weighs 6.13 ounces (174 grams) battery included.

- a standard paperback weighs 11.2 ounces (317grams)

- a 3.5 inch screen smartphone weighs 4.8 ounces (135 grams).

The screen offers a 166 dpi (dots per inch) resolution. Thanks to character anti-aliasing technology, the resolution perceived by the human eye is even higher.

For comparison, the resolution of a LCD screen of a standard desktop or laptop computer varies from 70 to 100  dpi.

For languages with a limited set of character as Cyrillic or Greek, the files can be read in all formats. The Cybook contains default fonts which can decode all these files. Please note that for text files, you will have to set a local information which specifies which is the language of the document.

For documents with an extended set of characters like Chinese, you will need to install your own font on the Cybook to decode your documents (except for PDF files which embed most of the times the required font). Please check "How to install a new font on the Cybook?".

Yes. Several books in different formats can be read at the same time, and you can switch from one to another very easily.

How many books and magazines can you put in your travel bag? How many books did you renounce to take with you because of the weight? Once arrived to destination, what do you do when you reach the last page of your last book?

If you have your Cybook with you, you will be able to carry with you all the books you want or to download them instantaneously.

There are many free eBook files available on Internet; most of the time these eBooks are classical titles, or free documents or gifts. The Cybook can read most of these files (see format support specification).

There are also paying books available in different digital formats generally protected by a Digital Right Management system. The Cybook supports one of the most spread eBook format: Mobipocket^TM. The Mobipocket^TM eBook files can be bought from several online eBook shops and their prices are generally 20% to 30% lower than the paper version.
